Our Story

It started with a conversation under the tamarind tree in the courtyard of the Fulbright Economics Teaching Program in Ho Chi Minh City.

Since 1994, FETP thrived as a joint venture between the Vietnam Program at the Harvard Kennedy School and the University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City, but the limits of growth as a partnership between two large organizations were apparent. The subject was how to envision an independent future for FETP.

The conversation expanded to include friends and stakeholders in Vietnam and the United States. People who believed in the promise of institutional innovation in a sector where innovation was limited. It continued, in Cambridge, in Hanoi. On the sidelines of formal bilateral luncheons and over iced coffee and pho in Saigon cafes.

The vision for FETP’s future that generated the most excitement was the boldest: create a self-governing, nonprofit university, with FETP as its founding nucleus.

TUIV was founded to make that vision a reality. We’re supporting Fulbright University Vietnam as an active participant in its governance, as a “systems integrator” connecting FUV with knowledge networks in the United States, and as resource mobilizer. We’re also stewarding the federal funding that is helping get the university off the ground.

After years of preparation behind the scenes, we’re now fully focused on designing and building FUV. We’re moving fast, and we’re not afraid of taking risks. We invite you to follow our progress under TUIV’s virtual tamarind tree, our blog, Ab Initio.
